Pure Water San Diego, California is a phased multi-year program that will provide a safe, secure and sustainable local drinking water supply by turning recycled water into drinkable water through the use of water purification technology. The recycled water is purified using membrane filtration, reverse osmosis and advanced oxidation with ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide. The purification process was proved viable through a demonstration project which purified one million gallons of water a day for one year and conducted more than 9,000 water quality tests. State and local regulators confirmed the purified water produced met all federal and state drinking water standards. Implementation of water purification in San Diego could account for one third of the city’s future water supply. The initial phase of 15 MGD is scheduled to be online in 2023 and the projected completion date of the 83 MGD facility is scheduled for 2035.
