Aurora Water, Aurora, Colorado (www.prairiewaters.org)
The City of Aurora, Colorado, began delivering water from the Binney Purification Facility in 2010 as a sustainable solution for long-term supply. Some of the source comes from the South Platte River that also receives a variety of agricultural and treated municipal wastewater discharges. The water is first pumped from 17 wells located within the confines of the South Platte River Banks and piped to the and then is piped to an Aquifer Storage and Recovery facility where it is first naturally treated by allowing the water to flow through sand and gravel. Then the water goes to the treatment process at the Binney Purification Facility. This facility has several steps including softening to remove excess calcium and magnesium, advanced ultraviolet light oxidation, followed by granular media filtration and activated carbon absorption.
